Native to Asia, this tree with grey-brown bark has very small, dark green leaves and flowers in small clusters at the tips of its branches. The fruit is an ovoid cone (4 cm) that is green when young and then brown when ripe, with unsightly scales. These large, pyramidal, evergreen trees were dedicated to Pluto, god of the underworld; which explains their frequent presence in cemeteries.

Other common names: Cupressus sempervirens, also called common cypress, evergreen cypress, Italian cypress, Provence cypress, or Mediterranean cypress.
