Native to Asia, this tree with gray-brown bark has very small, dark green leaves and flowers in small clusters at the end of the branches. The fruit is an ovoid cone (4 cm) green then brown when ripe with embarrassing scales. These tall, pyramidal, evergreen trees were dedicated to Pluto, god of the empire of the dead; which explains its frequent presence in cemeteries.
