Quick reference guide – Eucalyptus

Under the breath of the Eucalyptus

Did you know that there are several eucalyptus essential oils , each with its own particularities and specific uses? Distinguishing between them is the key to using them wisely and fully enjoying their benefits.

Eucalyptus radiata , globulus , menthol , smithii or lemon ?

Let's take a quick look at the most common eucalyptus essential oils to familiarize ourselves with this very interesting aromatic family in winter.

LEMON EUCALYPTUS – THE "FIREFIGHTER" OF AROMATHERAPY

________________________________________________________________________

Unlike other varieties, lemon eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora) stands out due to its unique biochemical profile. Rich in citronellal , a terpene aldehyde with powerful properties, it is known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, as well as its mosquito-repellent action – similar to citronella.

It's sometimes called the "firefighter" of aromatherapy , so effective is it at calming and soothing inflamed areas . Its fresh and pleasant lemony scent makes it an essential oil to help relieve tension and create a more serene atmosphere.

EUCALYPTUS RADIATA – THE ESSENCE OF BREATHING

________________________________________________________________________

Among the different varieties of eucalyptus, radiata is undoubtedly the best known and most tolerable. It is the one spontaneously associated with the atmosphere of saunas or hammams, where its freshness and invigorating fragrance are particularly appreciated.

This essential oil is primarily known for its respiratory benefits: it clears the airways and purifies the ambient air thanks to its richness in 1,8 cineole , an aromatic molecule with well-established expectorant properties.

Its main advantage lies in its exceptional tolerability : when inhaled, it generally does not cause spasms, and when applied diluted to the skin, it can be incorporated into children's respiratory balms , provided it is properly dosed. In winter, many parents use it in a gentle massage on the soles of the feet to promote respiratory comfort.

Finally, it should not be forgotten that eucalyptus radiata has been used for centuries by the Aboriginal people of Australia , who applied its fresh leaves directly to wounds to promote healing.

A very simple formula suitable for massaging children from 6 months old:

·         Eucalyptus radiata essential oil: 10 drops;

·         Roman chamomile (chamaemelum nobile) essential oil: 10 drops;

·         Apricot Kernel Vegetable Oil: 50 ml.

Massage the child's feet or back with 4 or 5 drops of this massage oil at bedtime for a restful sleep.

EUCALYPTUS GLOBULOSUS – POWER AND FRESHNESS

________________________________________________________________________

Among the varieties of eucalyptus, the globular eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) is one of the most widespread and widely used. More expectorant than Eucalyptus radiata, it is also known for its purifying properties . Some sources attribute antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties to it, making it a valuable ally for air purification.

However, it is less well tolerated on the skin and is not suitable for young children. Its ideal use remains atmospheric diffusion , alone or in synergy with other eucalyptus varieties. In a living room, bathroom, treatment room, or even a gym, it helps create a fresh and healthy atmosphere.

It is notably found associated with eucalyptus smithii in the Eucaly'pur essential oil blend for diffusion, particularly appreciated for purifying the air in common areas.

EUCALYPTUS SMITHII – FRESHNESS AND ENERGY IN DIFFUSION

________________________________________________________________________

Less well-known than its cousins, Eucalyptus radiata or Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus smithii is nonetheless essential for atmospheric diffusion . Very popular in England, it is attributed, in addition to its purifying and respiratory properties, an energetic dimension that makes it a valuable ally for revitalizing massages .

In this context, it is used in small doses , often combined with citrus fruits like grapefruit or a touch of black spruce, to create tannic and anti-fatigue massages. Its high concentration of 1,8-cineole gives it a powerful expectorant action, sometimes too intense for sensitive individuals.

⚠️ Precautions for use:

·         Never ingest it.

·         Avoid its use in children and pregnant women.

When diffused, however, it reveals its full power: its fresh, well-rounded fragrance purifies the air and creates a pleasant atmosphere. This is precisely why it's found in the Eucaly'pur essential oil blend for diffusion, ideal for living spaces.

Mentholated Eucalyptus – The Original of the Family

________________________________________________________________________

Mentholated eucalyptus (Eucalyptus dives) is a true anomaly among eucalyptus species. Unlike the radiata or globulus varieties, it is not a true expectorant and does not contain 1,8-cineole . Its distinguishing characteristic lies in its high piperitone content, an aromatic molecule from the ketone family, which gives it mucolytic (thinning secretions) and lipolytic (acting on fats) properties.

It is found in small doses in certain preparations intended for:

·         Soothe bronchitis and chesty coughs ;

·         Get into anti-cellulite or anti-fatty massage oils ;

·         To be added to shampoos for very oily hair .

⚠️ Precautions for use:

·         Not suitable for children , pregnant women or people with epilepsy .

·         Its use should always be supervised and cautious.

Its fresh and unique mentholated scent makes it an atypical but precious essential oil when used correctly.

    Checklist - Vegetable oils

    A vegetable oil is most of the time obtained by first cold pressing of a nut, a fruit or an oilseed. This oil is therefore comparable to a lipid "juice".

    There are, however, many plants which cannot produce oil by pressing, and yet whose beneficial action for health is expressed in oils. We then speak of oily macerate or maceration oil.

          For cutaneous use, the dilution of essential oils in a vegetable oil will vary according to the use and the targeted organ. It is traditionally accepted to use the following dilutions:

          • 1% essential oil: Cosmetic action (skin care)
          • 3% essential oil: Restorative action of the skin (stretch marks, …)
          • 5% essential oil: Action on the nervous system (stress, anxiety, sleep)
          • 7% essential oil: Circulatory action (heavy legs)
          • 10% essential oil: Action on muscles and joints dilution for irritating essential oils (Chinese cinnamon)
          • 15% essential oil: Action sport and competition
          • 20% essential oil: Dilution for dermocaustic essential oils (sweet orange, common oregano, wintergreen, …)
          • 30% essential oil: Very powerful local action
          • From 50% to 100% essential oil: Therapeutic action (time-limited use)
          The 4 rules of formulation:
          • Identify the therapeutic properties sought (what is my need?)
          • Select essential oils recognized for the desired effects (which essential oils to select?)
          • Choose a synergistic vegetable oil
          • Determine the concentration needed to optimize the desired effect
