Originally from South Africa (mother plant = Pelargonium graveolens), the geranium has been hybridized to produce cultivars in Egypt, China, and Réunion Island. The term "Bourbon" means "of the islands": the Bourbon cultivar comes primarily from the Indian Ocean (Réunion Island) but also from Madagascar, whose soils are favorable to its growth. Harvesting takes place at the beginning of flowering. It prefers sunny coastal slopes and sand dunes.
