Native to Madagascar, this evergreen and highly aromatic tree can reach 5 meters in height. In Malagasy, Mandravasarotra means "that which keeps evil away." It is the most widely used plant by the people of western Madagascar. In this region of Sakalava, it is called either Motrobeatiagnana or Motrobeatianina, meaning "great fire in the entrails," because its entire above-ground portion has a pungent and burning flavor. Depending on the Malagasy dialect, it is also called Fanalamangidy, "that which removes bitterness," or Mangidymanitra, "that which smells bitter," or Sakarivohazo, "ginger wood," or Sakaihazo, "chili wood."
