Native to Western Asia and Southern and Central Europe, this biennial herbaceous plant of the Lamiaceae family is widely cultivated in temperate countries as an ornamental plant, but primarily to produce an essential oil used in the manufacture of liqueurs and perfumes. Sage was one of the healing plants of the Middle Ages. The Greeks, Romans, and Arabs commonly used it as a tonic and in poultices against snakebites. Egyptian women used to drink sage juice to increase their fertility. "He who has sage in his garden needs no doctor" (Provençal saying).
